We rolled out of Orange Beach yesterday at the luxurious hour of 9:55am — a far cry from our usual early starts, but after a few restless nights (and a neighbor’s birthday bash), we gave ourselves some grace.

The forecast had promised a soggy, stormy drive… but Alabama pulled a fast one and delivered blue skies and perfect travel weather all the way. No complaints here.
Our destination for the night was Goat Island Brewing in Cullman, Alabama, a Harvest Hosts stop where they welcomed us to boondock out back in exchange for the noble task of helping them empty a few pint glasses. I’m nothing if not community-minded.
As luck would have it, we landed there on the night of their singing contest — Goat Island Idol — and the locals showed up ready to sing. The playlist leaned heavily into old-school country, with a few power ballads thrown in for good measure. It was top-tier entertainment, made even better by some solid beers and enthusiastic off-key harmonies.
We had hoped to grab dinner from a BBQ food truck, but it canceled last-minute — so we raided our freezer and cooked up something ourselves. Not just practical, but strategic: we’re heading for Canada, and their border patrol takes their meat rules seriously. We’re now on a mission to lighten our freezer load before the crossing.

This morning we hit the road again, cruising through Nashville and making our way toward Louisville. One day, one brewery, one freezer meal closer to Canada.
