Are you full-time RVers?

No. We are what we consider most-timers. We travel about 60% of the time, sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less. We still have home bases and we still run a full CPA firm. We just do it from wherever we happen to be parked.

What rig do you travel in?

We travel in Wild Blue Yonder, our 2021 Entegra Aspire 44W. She is a 44-foot, 11-inch Class A diesel pusher with four slide-outs, and she is the finest rig we have owned.

How long have you been RVing?

Accepted Answer

Since 2011, when we bought the Binker Lee, our first camper. It was a popup, and it started everything.

How do you work from the road?

The same way we work from home. The internet has made it remarkably easy to run a CPA firm from anywhere, and we have been doing exactly that for years. Our firm has always leaned into technology, so the transition was more natural for us than it might be for others.

How do you stay connected to the internet on the road?

We have gone through several solutions over the years. Early on we depended on wireless hotspots and spotty campground WiFi. Campground WiFi has improved quite a bit over the years, but nothing has changed the game like Starlink. All it needs is an open view of the sky and we are connected. It has been a difference maker.

Do you have a home base?

Yes, we still maintain a couple of home bases. One is in Lake Wylie, SC, which is just south of Charlotte, NC. The other is in Port St. Lucie, FL. We have family in the Charlotte area, and love the warm winters in Florida. We don't plan to give up either one anytime soon.

How do you handle mail?

Since we are not full-time and still have home bases, we have a few solutions working together. We have a private mailbox at both locations where business and personal mail goes. We can see what comes in remotely and have them open and scan anything important. They will also forward mail to us in bulk when needed. And of course, we have family who can check on things at the house and get us what we need.

Do you need a special license to drive a rig that size?

This is a point of confusion for a lot of RVers, and the honest answer is that it depends on your home state. Your home state license generally governs when you travel due to reciprocity, but you also have to comply with the rules of whatever state you are driving in at the time. In South Carolina, smaller RVs can be towed with a Class D (standard) license if the GVW is less than 26,000 pounds. Once you start getting into big rigs, and particularly Class A motorhomes, the requirements change. South Carolina requires a Class E (motorhome only) or Class F (towing) once your weight gets over 26,000 pounds. By contrast, Florida requires no special license. Around 15-16 states require something beyond a standard license for larger RVs or heavy combinations (usually over 26,000 lbs GVWR/GCWR). Most states (roughly 34-35) allow personal RV use with just your regular license. Of course, if you are driving the motorhome commercially, all those rules go out the door as you would be required to have a CDL or similar license.

How do you find campgrounds?

We use a variety of sources depending on what kind of campground we are looking for and where we are headed. If we are looking to stay somewhere several days, my first stop is the Upscale RV Group on Facebook and their app. My second go-to is RV Life and their RV Trip Wizard. We are also Harvest Hosts members. There are also free options like BLM land and other public lands out west.

Do you boondock or prefer full hookups?

I always prefer full hookups. That said, I boondock when I have to. When we traveled to Alaska, there were several nights with no hookups at all and quite a few with only an electrical connection. Harvest Hosts and other overnight stops lend themselves to boondocking as well. But if we are somewhere for more than a night or two, I want hookups.

What's your favorite destination so far?

This is a hard question to answer because so many places are great in their own way. They are just different from each other. But if we had to pick one, it would be Alaska. The raw natural beauty and the sheer remoteness of it is something you have to experience to fully appreciate.

What's the hardest part of this lifestyle?

Being away from family for extended periods of time, and being away from the close friends I have made over 30-plus years in the Charlotte area. The road gives you a lot, but it does put distance between you and the people who matter most.

What do you wish you had known before you started?

Accepted Answer

When we started out in the popup, we weren't thinking about any of this. It was just camping. The idea that it would turn into a most-time lifestyle wasn't on our radar, and honestly, the logistics came naturally as we grew into bigger rigs and longer trips. What took longer was giving ourselves permission to actually do it at the scale we do it now. The other thing nobody tells you is that every rig feels like the right one until it doesn't.

How do you travel with a dog?

Traveling with a dog in an RV is easier than most people expect. Juneaux has more space in Wild Blue Yonder than she would in most hotel rooms. Dogs are remarkably adaptable. The routine is everything. We keep her schedule as consistent as we can no matter where we're parked.

What advice would you give someone just getting started?

The best advice I can give is to stop waiting for everything to line up perfectly. The right rig, the right time, the right financial moment. It doesn't come. Your travel style will also change, probably more than you expect. Don't over-invest in assumptions about how you'll travel before you've actually done it.
